New Talcum Powder Lawsuits Filed Against Johnson & Johnson

More lawsuits are being filed against the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. The lawsuits all claim that the pharmaceutical company knew of the dangers that its products containing talcum powder presented, but continued to market and sell those products.

A spokesperson for consumer information site, talcumpowder.org says, "In one particular case, a Tennessee woman used talc from Johnson & Johnson for more than 30 years, which the lawsuit claims directly caused the ovarian cancer that she was diagnosed with in 2013."

Lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson allege that the pharmaceutical giant received and then concealed information from research scientists that proves talc, when applied to the genital area of women, can be absorbed through the skin, which causes talc to move to the ovaries and cause cancer. Plaintiffs claim that the pharmaceutical company knew of these risks, and have known about them for decades, but continued to produce and market their products that contain talcum powder.

"We're expecting this to be a huge lawsuit given the number of women who have used talc over the years," says an attorney handling one lawsuit.

Currently, there are more than 2,000 lawsuits that are pending throughout New Jersey, California, and Missouri. The first lawsuit was filed on behalf of an Alabama woman who died in 2015 from ovarian cancer. This particular case resulted in the jury awarding the woman's family $72 million. A second case revolved around a woman from South Dakota who received more than $50 million in damages. A third lawsuit awarded a California woman more than $70 million in damages.

Despite those rulings, however, Johnson & Johnson states that they choose to remain optimistic, claiming that the evidence being presented is in their favor. Studies done over the past four decades however, show that there is an association between talc and ovarian cancer. Despite these lawsuits, the pharmaceutical company has yet to pull its popular Shower To Shower and baby powder products from store shelves.
