Uber paid hackers $100,000, concealed massive data breach

Uber paid hackers a $100,000 ransom to delete the stolen personal information of 50 million Uber customers and 7 million drivers. Hackers in October 2016 accessed the names, email addresses and phone numbers of riders and drivers as well as the driver's license numbers of 600,000 drivers that were stored on Amazon Web Services. The ride hailing service concealment of the massive data breach has prompted an investigation by the New York State Office of the Attorney General.


Apple revealed that students illegally worked overtime at its Foxconn factory in China. Students between the ages of 17 to 19 who were part of an internship program voluntarily worked more than 11 hours per day making iPhone X components. The students were paid for their work but labor laws do not allow students to work overtime.


The Justice Department has fined Terminix $9.2 million for using a banned pesticide at 14 locations that poisoned a Delaware family. Methyl bromide was sprayed at the Sirenusa condominium resort in St. John, Virgin Islands where the Esmond family was vacationing. The family became ill, experienced seizures and suffered neurological damage after being exposed to the pesticide.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 6 to 5 on both the NYSE and on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 slipped 2 points to 2,596. Bitcoin surged $146 to $8,124.
